About Us

About Us

The East Cambridge Business Association (ECBA) is a 501c4 non-profit membership based organization, founded in 2008, that represents 150 businesses (and growing) in East Cambridge and Inman Square neighborhoods of Cambridge, MA

History

Our History

The East Cambridge Business Association (ECBA) was formed in 2008 by six local business owners with an eye to the future. They recognized that the evolution of Kendall Square from a center for manufacturing to a hub for technology and life sciences innovation, and the long-awaited development of the Northpoint area (now Cambridge Crossing), would bring an influx of new residents, businesses and opportunities. Through this growth, they sought to maintain the neighborhood’s authentic, family owned, small business community culture – a product of its working-class immigrant roots – and continue to meet the everyday needs of longtime residents and newcomers alike.

In 2017, the ECBA merged with the neighboring Inman Square Business Association, further strengthening the Cambridge Street commercial corridor. Today, our membership is over 150 businesses strong and reflects the variety that East Cambridge, Inman Square, and Kendall Square have to offer – a vibrant ecosystem of large and small businesses that support one another. The ECBA continues to work tirelessly as an advocate for its members, to be stewards of the business district, and to create strong connections between business owners for the betterment of our shared community.

Mission

To promote and maintain sustainable commerce in East Cambridge; to be a single voice for its members; to promote activities that bond East Cambridge businesses with their neighborhood; to preserve the historical integrity and importance of East Cambridge; and to promote an active stewardship of our neighborhood

Advocacy

The Small Business Perspective

As advocates we keep the interest of the small business community at the forefront. We aim to keep you informed about the Inman Square reconstruction; apprised of municipal discussions that may impact your business; and we will seek out ways that make it easier to conduct business in the City of Cambridge. We are proud to say that our past efforts have resulted in the Recycling Program for Small Businesses. We continue to advocate for the expansion of the program and the addition of composting. This year small business faced unprecedented impacts from the COVID 19 pademic. The ECBA worked to connect business owners with the resources they needed and provided support for those that were impacted. We will continue to focus on these issues and other cost savings measures for business owners while also advocating for thigns that we feel will make our business district and community a better place.

The ECBA Board is an 11 person working board  with a commitment to monthly board meetings, volunteering for ECBA produced events, and committee work/meetings.
